Brigitte Bere -Women In Transition
On October 12th, 2011 I visited the Temiskaming Art Gallery in Canada. The exposition was from Brigitte Bere. Her work was Women In Transition.
The work was really fantastic, displaying how women changed along the years. With touches of celtic symbols; it all tied in together. I couldn't help but notice the way women used to be portrayed in the artist's eyes and how they are portrayed now. Most of the paintings and art work involved women turned around looking at the desolated world they live in.
This really made me think about how women really started to embody power and the social acceptance of it all. I started thinking about how the twentieth century really incarnated changes in human history such as great political upheavals, dramatic discoveries in medicine and science, and a new emphasis on human rights. In these and many other achievements, women played a significant role through it all. I felt like women from all over the world whose cultural, intellectual, political, and economic accomplishments made history, and have inestimably enriched the world in which we live.
One really stood out to me coming from France. Gabrielle Chanel, also known as Coco Chanel. She revolutionized women's fashion. She wanted to create clothing that women were as equally comfortable in as men's clothing were for men. She created simple, straight silhouette, with short skirts and low waistlines. She tailored clothes to be more like men's with her signature chunky costume jewelry. Women suddenly found themselves wearing pants and jackets which was a long way from the Marie Antoinette style dresses and hats.
Her post-war collections were best known for her suits of jersey and fine tweed with collarless jackets and certain trademark accessories such as the quilted handbags, multiple strands of pearls, and beige slingback pumps with black toes. This women had audacity to design clothes that were way beyond the years.
So this post is for women all over the world. Embrace the fact that you're a women and that we have fought hard to get the well deserved respect and equality we have today!
