Refugees

"No matter what he does, every person on earth plays a central role in the history of the world."- Paulo Coelho in the Alchemist

I'm extremely appalled about the refugee status argument that has been going on for the past few months, especially around the Canadian Federal Elections. People are saying to not let any more refugees in their country because of monetary reasons, differing opinions in religions, and finally the fact that they come from another country or continent.

I believe we should let in more refugees in every country because they are being terrorized to death. Literally. We are all part of the human race. I don't get the different country argument, I don't get the religion argument, and I also don't get the monetary argument. We are all people, humans, end of story. Why do we have to wear everything like a war sweater. We pick sides. We are to blame for all the atrocities done in the past to the human race.

I feel like it's time for the human race to learn from their past mistakes. Let's talk about WWII and the  "Final Solution" in exterminating the Jews. If every single country accepted Jews, took them in under refugee status and saved them from perishing at the hands of those who were terrorizing them, there might be less people dead today. We, the human race, let six million people perish. We were part and participated in the "Final Solution" by not saving them. People might not be full of regret today had we not participated in the mass murders and the horrors that occurred in those camps.

Also, why should we care about costs of taking in refugees and claiming that we should help "our own" at home before helping others, when we are spending billions of dollars to go to war and not complaining about that because it's not on Canadian soil. What people don't understand obviously is that they are "our own." Let me tell you from experience and travel, that the Canadian poor still have far more than most countries. I don't get how we can justify sacrificing lives to save on taxes. It doesn't make any sense. You live in the first world country, you've never really travelled to a third world country or a war country and you have the audacity to sign a petition pleading your government to not let any refugees in? You know no real danger. If the roles were reversed and the people signing would be in the refugee's shoes, they would want to get themselves, their children, and their families out of that dangerous, life-threatning situation as fast as possible.

Twice now, I've had the pleasure of seeing Eva Olsson speak and let me tell you her story changed my life. She is a Jewish Auschwitz survivor and she does speaking engagements on bullying and hate. She talks about this exactly. Why are we so full of hate. We need to realize that we are all human and no one life is better than another. Some people don't realize that most Canadians and US citizens are from immigrated descendants. I know if roles were reversed, all those opposing refugees coming in to the country would change their minds if they were being murdered and/or lost their homes and families.

Let's put our first world needs aside for once and help those who really need us. Let's not repeat history and regret it afterwards. Those people that we are saving once had families and homes that were all taken from them. Let's open our arms and show love, compassion, empathy to those who are really in need. Let's start showing the world love, not hate.

I'm going to conclude this post with John Lennon lyrics to Imagine.

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
